SOI Foundation - Graphic Design Work
I previously worked as the Communications and Media Coordinator at the SOI Foundation. My day-to-day consisted of everything from graphic design, copywriting, event planning, interviewing successful alumni, designing newsletters and managing website content.
I was the internal graphic designer on the team. We collaborated with Pound & Grain, a digital design agency, to redesign our website and elevate our branding Spring of 2021. I worked closely with their design team to select new colours, fonts and visual components to bring in to SOI’s new look.
Following the redesign, I implemented the new visual identity to create social media graphics, advertisements, print material and more using the Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Canva.

A few projects I’ve done for SOI have their own pages on my website including SOI’s 2020 Impact Report, my graphic illustration recording for Blue Futures Pathways Roundtable event, and advertising for the Alumni Virtual Summit.
Tube Scarf for Expedition to Community (E2C)
In collaboration with SOI’s E2C team we collaborated on coming up with an item we could give to community participants to increase brand awareness but also provide value and not create waste. Someone suggested a tube scarf to help brave the cold, but also helps associate our brand with feelings of warmth, utility and comfort. I worked with the community leaders to select colours they liked and illustrate scenes you’d see throughout the community. The final scarves came out great and apparently would quickly run low at events. I heard they’re also great to wear while skidoo-ing!
Arctic 2019 T-Shirt Design
One of the coolest things about going on an SOI Expedition in the middle of summer is witnessing the sun never actually setting - The Midnight Sun! I took this concept and illustrated a simple design that was affordable to print and would bond participants on their shared experiences of seeing the sun all night while on expedition. I included some of the wildlife they saw, icebergs and a zodiac ship so they could use the shirt as a jumping off point to share stories of their journey. It was awesome seeing everyone wearing and complimenting the t-shirts as they arrived home from expedition!
Academic Posters for Arctic Futures
I worked with our Alumni Team and alumni delegates to design posters to present at the Arctic Futures Conference in Washington, D.C. They presented the written information they wanted to share and I came up with two designs.
First, a poster all about the success of the organization and important equation for academic success while on expeditions. I wanted to think of a way to get people to engage with the poster when it wasn’t accompanied by our delegates. I thought the simplicity of a port-hole and a circular wheel you could spin would be enough to draw people in and get them to read about Students on Ice.
Second, a poster that encourages conference attendees who represent larger powerful organizations to think critically about how (if at all) they engage youth in their decision making and ways they can make that engagement more meaningful. This took the form of a quiz where you are asked prompting questions followed by advice depending on where you land.
