World Building Pixel Art

Pixel Art – New Worlds

I designed this pixel artwork that features one of my favourite projects by each of my classmates over the last year! I'm in awe of how, with each project, we begin with the same brief and design massively different, immersive mini-worlds. I selected one project for each of my classmates and interpreted it in a mini-pixel way.

Pixel art is a medium that requires designing within limitations.
The medium is an ode to the original creation of the earliest video games. It felt like a natural medium for this program as well, as we are constantly levelling up our skills and overcoming challenges individually and as teammates.

From Sunset to Sunrise
I designed the characters, worlds, and sky to work together and separate in different formations. Examples could include in the animation and poster below.

Sprite versions of my classmates
I studied how standard pixel faces and bodies are done and created a template for myself. I added details of outfits or accessories. All of my classmates were very happy with the outcome!

Blocking out the design
I needed to create an original piece that could be broken up into different sections, fit various formats, and work as a 24x36” poster design.

Additionally, the different worlds took place at different times of day, so I wanted them to work seamlessly with one another so the animation would look like the sun setting and rising.
