Graphic Facilitation: Youth Roundtable on Canada’s Sustainable Blue Economy

On June 9, the SOI Foundation hosted an event to mark World Ocean Week, bringing together Canadian youth aged 18-30 to provide their perspectives on the Sustainable Blue Economy and to feed into Canada’s Blue Economy Strategy. Read more about the event here!

Organization:
Blue Futures Pathways by the SOI Foundation
Goal:
Summarize the key takeaways from the youth roundtable into a graphic recording to be presented to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
My role:
I was an apprentice for Kara Stonehouse from Aha! Graphic Facilitation. I completed one of the four key sections titled Community Water Values (Bottom Right Bubble).

My Section
As an apprentice, I was responsible for one section titled Community Water Values. Kara and I met ahead of time where she shared her strategy of properly representing the main takeaways from an event. She emphasized the importance of creating a structure behind the ideas to show how they all connect.

The Process

  • Listen and take notes during the presentation about topics, quotes, and key reoccurring themes.

  • Create a concept for the ideas to live within. I selected the idea of several waterways bringing together all the various values people had about water.

  • Complete an initial drawing in 15 minutes to present to participants before end of event.

  • Following the event, I polished the illustration while still maintaining a look of doodles and brainstorming.

  • We met with the facilitators from the event for feedback to ensure that we captured the essence of the discussion properly.

  • After having to make minor changes, we submitted the illustration to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans!

Initial Concept
I created this drawing during the Roundtable Event. We had 15 minutes to condense our notes into the key topics and add illustrations. I learned it is important in a time crunch to trust your gut and moving quickly, instead of getting caught up at the beginning making sure your idea is good enough.

Final Section
This was my final submission for the Communnity Water Values section. I heard positive feedback from the team and facilitators about how this section was easy to understand and accurately represented the takeaways from the discussion.

Extra Illustration Components
Kara did an incredible job at creating a colour palette and background for the illustration. I created some smaller illustrations to add to the background to fill space and create visual interest.
